There are a few rules, but creativity is essential. Goggles, beards (and sometimes creative mustaches) for males, and corsets for ladies are key elements. Dressing up is an important component of steampunk’s appeal for both creators and fans. Steampunk allows you a new approach to do costuming in which you don’t have to dress up as someone else’s persona. Much of it is about designing your own character and universe. It’s a cliche, but a lot of women are obsessed with fashion.
